Playing with Care
Gambling responsibly means playing deliberately and staying in control, so that the danger of playing too much remains small and addiction never takes hold. A large share of this is down to players themselves: anyone who watches how often they play and how much they spend will notice warning signs earlier.
The operator carries part of the burden too. Zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. obliges gambling operators, KAIZEN GAMING CZ LIMITED among them, to give players tools and information for playing safely: limits on money and time, information about risks and about excluding oneself, and measures that protect minors.
Warning Signs
Problem gambling develops gradually, so it makes sense to be alert to the first hints. Typical ones are:
- you play more often or for higher amounts than before,
- you try to win back losses with more play,
- you borrow to gamble or go over a limit you set yourself,
- you hide your gambling from family and friends,
- you put off work, school or duties at home because of gambling,
- you keep playing although it brings you debts or disputes,
- you feel restless, irritable or anxious when you cannot play,
- your mental or physical health suffers in connection with gambling.
If any point fits you or someone close to you, do not wait and act right away.
Tools in the Player Account
Under zákon č. 186/2016 Sb., each registered Betano player has tools in the account to keep an eye on play and rein it in:
- Time limit and reality check. Pick how much time per day or per week gambling may take; a recurring pop-up (the reality check) tells you how long you have already been playing.
- Time-out. A pause lasting 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days; for that period the account stays locked and no play is possible. Afterwards the account switches back on.
- Deposit limit. A daily, weekly or monthly ceiling on what you transfer to the gaming account. Once you reach it, deposits are refused until the period is over.
- Limit on stakes and losses. It caps the total staked or the net loss over a period you choose; at the cap, the system stops further play.
Limits are set, lowered or cancelled right in the account. Raising one is possible only after a cooling-off period of no less than 24 hours.
The Panic Button
From 1 July 2024, every operator of online gambling and of gaming halls must provide a panic button, as required by § 16bb of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. It sits in the user interface and is available to every registered player.
One press and the player is shut out of all gambling straight away, temporarily, for 48 hours. This applies automatically across all of the operator's online platforms, and the player is also offered the chance to apply for an entry in the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO).
Self-Exclusion and the Register of Excluded Persons
Zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. lets any player request exclusion from gambling, for a limited time or for good. The request is made in your user account or with the operator directly.
The Register of Excluded Persons (RVO) is maintained by the Ministry of Finance (Ministerstvo financí ČR) on the basis of zákon č. 186/2016 Sb. It contains people who requested exclusion on their own and people whom the law itself excludes, for instance because of debt enforcement, insolvency or certain social benefits. An entry is valid with every licensed operator in the Czech Republic, not just the one you approached, and for as long as it lasts you may not gamble with any of them. You can ask to be removed 1 year after entry at the earliest.
You can apply for entry in four ways:
- through your user account with the gambling operator,
- by pressing the panic button and confirming the request afterwards,
- via the data box of the Ministry of Finance,
- in person at a Czech POINT office.
The Age Limit of 18
Under zákon č. 186/2016 Sb., gambling is allowed only from the age of 18, and the operator must enforce the ban on participation by minors. That is why it checks every player's age and identity, for example through BankID or by another method, both at registration and before winnings are paid out.
Seven Questions for a Self-Check
The questions follow the PGSI (Problem Gambling Severity Index). The result is only a pointer and will not replace a professional diagnosis.
- Do you end up spending more on gambling than you planned?
- Do you tell yourself that you should cut down?
- Do you feel guilty about gambling?
- Do you keep playing to make up for losses?
- Do duties or loved ones take a back seat because of gambling?
- Has someone told you that your gambling is a problem?
- Have you borrowed money so that you could gamble?
Did you answer yes to several questions? Then it is a good idea to reach for the prevention tools or seek professional help.
